Engineering Success for Louise and SCE

31 August 2021

Earlier this month, we celebrated with our Service Follow-up team-member, Louise after she had successfully passed her HNC Electrical Engineering award. A two-year course, the award develops a student's technical knowledge of key electrical engineering principals and gives them the knowledge they need to confidently step into a career in engineering.

Starting with SCE in 2017, Louise did her first six months at the AMRC training centre, before going on the road with engineers and later deciding to start on the HNC in Electrical Engineering.

Louise had to balance her study, work, and personal life all whilst the country faced COVID-19. Our Managing Director, Ray Fletcher, shares in the celebrations,

"It is a pleasure for me to extend my congratulations to Louise with regards to this achievment. The circumstances concerning the completion of this course were made all the more difficult due to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, and many attendees did not manage to complete this course as a result. It is testament to her positive attitude and tenacity."

Louise's interest in engineering came from her family, particularly her dad and uncles. Louise explains,

"I was always around engineering, my dad and uncles all work in different sectors of engineering and I always helped my dad at home when he was working on his motorbikes and around the house."

This early inspiration motivated Louise to pursue a career in engineering.

Starting with SCE as an Apprentice Service Engineer was exactly what she had hoped for,

"I had been on training such as Ipaf and harness training, CSCS training and others to make sure I'd be able to get at height and on sites. I was introduced to a lot of big customers, and I loved being on new sites and being able to see what they do. Going to breakdowns, fault finding, and trying to get them working again was so enjoyable."

Joining our Service Follow-up team seemed a natural step to her,

"The opportunity came up and I thought I'd put myself forward, I was delighted to be successful in my application. I do miss the practical side of being on site and being hands-on with the tools, but I am still able to use my training in my new role"

Louise's practical experience has proven invaluable to the SFU team, and the office as a whole,

"My knowledge of the sites and how the engineers work has helped me plan for different outcomes and make sure the job has everything it needs to be completed effectively"

The training, Louise says, felt like a natural step in her career,

"There is always the opportunity to learn and progress here at SCE, when I completed my level three apprenticeship with the AMRC, I had the opportunity to take it further. I chose to start HNC in Electrical Engineering to further my knowledge and the units I studied where helping me whilst on site. I have been able to go on multiple training courses while working with SCE, such as LEEA."

Plans for the future? Louise is relaxed about her options and confident in her capacity to further her abilities.

"I'm not sure what I'll do in the future, I love being in both practical and office-based roles, so I'll just see what happens. I'm always looking for ways to train, improve, and get qualifications. There's always things I can learn to help me at work and benefit the company."

Louise's determination to complete the course is shown in her work with SCE. Managing Director, Ray Fletcher goes on,

"In recent times, Louise has been working within our Service Follow-up estimating team after initially starting her career with SCE as an Apprentice Service Engineer. The technical knowledge that Louise gained in the more practical side of our business has paved the way for a very successful transition into our internal estimating team. We have a wealth of experience and this additional qualification that Louise has achieved adds even more weight to our technical credentials."
